Shame
Shame was never something that came easily to the woman born as Miaoshan Du; while she was someone who never quite fit in with those around her, for whatever reason, she had enough personal pride that she rarely saw that as a failing on her own part.
No, in fact—on the occasions she felt shame, it was largely due to feeling as though she had been influenced by those around her. Feeling too swayed by the world, and by compromise; feeling as though she had deferred her own principles. These considerations didn't keep her up during the day terribly much (what kept her up during the day was largely the fact that she did not want to stop working, in fact) but did occasionally give her pause.
What did give her a great deal of pause, though, was the knowledge that her friend, E
